Working with your doctors to keep yourself healthy is important. This is especially true when it comes to your teeth. Dr. James Cinamon and Dr. Paul Hubley of The Cinnamon & Hubley Dental Practice in Framingham, Massachusetts believe in educating their patients on all matters of their dental health. Here's how to make sure you're doing the right thing when it comes to your dental care at home.
Like washing the dishes after a meal, brushing your teeth scrubs away food particles that have been left behind. However, if you're brushing incorrectly, you might not be getting the most out of this important routine. Your Framingham dentist reminds you to make sure you're brushing at least twice a day for two minutes each time. You can think of your mouth as quadrants - upper left, lower left, upper right, lower right - and spend 30 seconds on each section to divide the time evenly. You should also make sure you're using a brush that has soft bristles with a non-abrasive toothpaste; this keeps your enamel from being etched and your gum tissue from becoming irritated. Replace your toothbrush every three to four months; bacteria buildup and a breakdown of the bristles can render it less than effective.
When your Framingham dentist asks you if you've been flossing, are you tempted to stretch the truth a bit? Flossing removes the food particles that your toothbrush can't reach, keeping plaque away from the gums and out of the spaces between your teeth. Flossing seems like a difficult habit to pick up, but following these tips from Dr. Hubley and Dr. Cinamon might make it a little easier.
- Use the flossing picks rather than the spool floss. They are easier to manipulate, especially for younger patients.
- Choose a time of day and place to floss that works for you. Keep flossing picks in your bedside table, your car's glove compartment, or in your purse.
- You only need to floss once a day but remember that plaque begins to turn to tartar after about 24 hours. Tartar is nearly impossible to remove except with a dental hygienist's tools.
